This course belongs to the class of complementary courses for the PhD curricula “Life Sciences”. It aims at teaching both English for public speaking and practical methods and helps to develop specific professional skills.
Basic English (for those with a basic knowledge of English able to produce writing and some spontaneous speech) provides students with an understanding of the use of practical English in everyday scenarios and the practical skills needed to approach the use of the English language in formal and non-formal settings. 

The course covers the following topics:
 

1. Basic professional and non-formal introductions Students will learn to be fluid and comfortable in their presentations.
2. Properly and politely asking for and giving information: Students will practice asking for and receiving information and learn a variety of ways to do so.
3. Most common verb phrases in the English language: We will review together and put into practice the most common verb phases in English.
4. Getting what you want and need in English: students will learn the proper way to achieve what they seek. How to use proper manners in English.
5. Talking to new acquaintances and making friends: We will practice dialoging with someone we just met in both professional and informal settings.
6. Practice presentations: Students will have the opportunity to improve their presentation skills in a positive and constructive setting.
7. Review and knowledge sharing: We will review our course material together and share best practices.
